Worthing AOK vs East Grinstead Towers

A tense meeting of the two teams that battled for the League title in the regular season…

Half time score was 34-34 in an evenly matched first half…

With 3mins 22 left to play the score was 55-49 to AOK… a gap in the video footage (thankfully) hides the Towers’ 7-point unanswered run to bring the score to 55-56 with 1min 51 left to play.  A back pick from Steve Weller allowed Nick hamilton to cut to the basket and receive an assist from Matt Horner for an easy lay-up to put AOK ahead by one again (57-56).

With 16:46 seconds left on the clock, and with AOK trailing by 3 (57-60), Steve Weller “posts up on the right low block, is fed the ball by Nick Hamilton, ball fakes left before spinning right on a hard dribble.  A shot fake later, he draws contact and sinks the two.  Towers take a time-out to ice the big man but no dice… the free throw is Money“… to draw both teams level at 60:60.

With 16:09 left to play, Towers miss the shot, Gareth Morgans rebounds and is imediately fouled to take him to the free-throw line for 1-on-1.  He scrores the first to take AOK 1 point up (61-60) but misses the second which Towers rebound and start what could be one final offence.  Great defence by AOK sees a frantic Towers panic a final shot which Matt Horner plays sterling defence in pressuring but not fouling the shooter to secure the 61-60 AOK win, and a defence of their Cup Title.
